February 20, 2001

Q: The European Council of Foreign Ministers said that it would not co-table an anti-China draft resolution with the United States in the UN Human Rights Commission Session this year. What is your comment?

A: The European Council of Foreign Ministers made a decision on March 19th that it would not join the United States in tabling anti-China draft resolution in the UN Human Rights Commission Session this year. The Chinese Government expresses its welcome towards this. The decision made by the European Union is conducive to the dialogue and exchange in the field of human rights between China and the European Union and to the further development of the bilateral relations between China and the member states of the European Union. Meanwhile we hope the European Union can evaluate the human rights situation in China in an objective and impartial manner and adopt more positive and constructive position in the UN Human Rights Commission Session
