The MFA Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs Lodges Representations to the Philippines on the Intention of the Philippines to Bring the Dispute over Huangyan Island Territorial Sovereignty to International Arbitration

On April 28, 2012, Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Deng Zhonghua summoned Charge D'affaires of the Philippine embassy in China Alex Chua to lodge solemn representations on the intention of the Philippines to bring the dispute over the territorial sovereignty of Huangyan Island to international arbitration.

Deng pointed out that the Huangyan Island is an inherent part of the Chinese territory and there is no legal ground to bring it to international arbitration. If one country arbitrarily brings another country's territorial sovereignty to international arbitration, the basic norms governing modern international relations will be violated and it will also do major harm to the existing international order. China urges the Philippines to truly respect its territorial sovereignty and refrain from taking any move which will escalate and complicate the situation. China also calls upon the Philippines to solve the dispute through diplomatic channels so as to bring peace and tranquility back to the Huangyan Island.
