Ambassador Li Ruiyou held a Rally in East New Britain Province to Commemorate the War Veterans and the 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War
2015/04/06

At the Qing Ming Festival (also known as “Tomb-Sweeping Day”), Ambassador Li Ruiyou visited “Cemetery of War Veterans and Victims in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression” in Rabaul in East New Britain Province and held a rally there to commemorate the War Veterans and the 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Representatives of local Chinese community and enterprises, and members of the landowner family attended the gathering. Deputy provincial administrator of East New Britain Province Mr. Edward Lamur Ady was present on behalf of the Provincial Government. Mr. Zhang Liyong, Economic Counsellor of the Embassy, presided over the event.

Ambassador Li and Mr. Ady placed wreaths to the veterans’ cemetery and both delivered a speech. Li said, during the Chinese People’s resistance against Japanese aggression, hundreds of Chinese prisoners of war and civilians were brought to Rabaul and forced to do hard labour. Among them there were 36 prisoners of war who belonged to the Kuomintang Army’s “Eight Hundred Heroes” fighting against Japanese soldiers in Shanghai. They were abused and tortured, some of them died and were buried here. The Chinese government provided funding to build this mausoleum in 2009 on the site of the old graves, and asked local landowners to look after it. Li pointed out that the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was part and parcel of the World Anti-Fascist War. The Chinese people fought side by side with those, including the PNG people, who suffered from fascist aggression, and made major historic contribution to the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. China together with the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union and other nations made a valuable contribution to the establishment of the United Nations and the international order with UN as the centre. While doing all this, the Chinese people made enormous national sacrifice. According to incomplete statistics, up to 35 million Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed or maimed during the War.

Ambassador Li told the audience that the Chinese government will in this year hold a solemn commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, with the aim at remembering history, honoring the fallen heroes, cherishing peace and creating a better future.

Mr. Edward Ady in his remarks said, during the war time, the Chinese people fought bravely the War of Resistance and made a significant contribution to the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War. The friendship forged between the people of our two countries during World War II has played a positive role for the development of the relations between our two counties.
