Papua New Guinean Prime
Minister Sir Michael Thomas Somare said Tuesday that his
country sticks to One-China policy.
"Taiwan is a province of China and PNG will not have
official contact of any kind with Taiwan," the prime
minister said at a meeting here with Liu Yunshan, a member
of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China
(CPC). Somare, also head of the ruling
National Alliance party, said his party is willing to
tighten ties with the CPC in an effort to promote the
relations between the two countries. He
thanked the Chinese government and its people for their
great assistance accorded to PNG in its economic
development. Liu, also a member of the
Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and head of the
Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee,
congratulated PNG on its 28th Independence Day which falls on Tuesday. He also expressed
his appreciation with PNG government's pursuit of One-China
policy. He said the Chinese government
values high the Sino-PNG friendship and is willing to
promote, in a joint effort with PNG, the relations between
the two countries and political parties on the basis of
mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit. Liu and his entourage arrived here on Tuesday on
a five-day official visit at the invitation by the National
Alliance party.
