Q: It's reported that Taipei office
of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) invited Taiwan's
political figures including top officials from the so-called
"Executive Yuan" and "Legislative Yuan"
to attend a grand reception held on July 3 in Taipei to
celebrate the US Independence Day. What's your
comment?
A: Above actions by Taipei
office ofAmerican Institute in Taiwan's did not conform to
its status and function as a non-governmental organization
and blatantly violated the principles of the three Sino-US
Joint Communiques and the relevant commitments made by the
United States. China hereby wishes to express its strong
dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to the AIT's actions
and has made solemn representations to the United
States.
We urge the United States again to
recognize the importance and sensitivity of the Taiwan
issue, abide by its promises, correct its mistakes and stop
upgrading relations with Taiwan, so as to avoid impairing
Sino-US relations and the common interests of the two sides.
